A dramatic, fog-filled Halloween sangria with red wine, brandy, and fresh fruit, perfect for adults-only gatherings. The dry ice creates a spooky, low-lying fog that transforms any party into a haunted affair.

  • 1 bottle (750 ml) red wine (Merlot, Zinfandel, or Tempranillo)
  • 1/2 cup brandy
  • 1/4 cup orange liqueur (triple sec or Cointreau)
  • 1 cup unsweetened apple cider
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup (optional, to taste)
  • 1 large apple (Honeycrisp or Fuji), thinly sliced
  • 1 large orange, sliced into rounds and quartered
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds (optional)
  • 1–2 pounds dry ice
  • 1 cup room-temperature water

Instructions

  1. Wash and slice the apple into thin rounds, then cut each round in half. Slice the orange into rounds, then quarter each round. Rinse blackberries and pat dry. Set pomegranate seeds aside if using.
  2. In a large punch bowl or pitcher, combine red wine, brandy, orange liqueur, apple cider, and fresh orange juice. Stir gently. Taste and add simple syrup if desired.
  3. Add sliced apple, orange pieces, and blackberries to the liquid. Stir to coat fruit. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  4. About 30 minutes before serving, remove sangria base from fridge and stir. Add pomegranate seeds if using.
  5. Put on kitchen gloves and use tongs to add a golf ball-sized piece of dry ice to the punch bowl. Immediately add 1 cup room-temperature water to create fog. Wait 5-10 minutes until fog subsides before serving.
  6. Ladle sangria into glasses, ensuring each gets some fruit. The fog effect lasts 20-30 minutes; add more dry ice and water as needed.

Notes

Handle dry ice with gloves; never touch directly. Wait for dry ice to fully sublimate before serving. For best flavor, chill sangria base overnight. Use room-temperature water for optimal fog effect.
