A classic, refreshing Mint Julep cocktail perfect for summer parties, featuring fresh mint, bourbon, sugar, and crushed ice for a cooling and flavorful drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 810 fresh mint leaves per cocktail, plus extra for garnish
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar per drink or 1 tablespoon simple syrup
  • 2 ounces (60 ml) bourbon whiskey per serving
  • Crushed ice
  • Splash of water (about 1 tablespoon / 15 ml) to dissolve sugar

Instructions

  1. Chill your julep cup or glass in the freezer for 5-10 minutes.
  2. Place 8-10 fresh mint leaves and 1 teaspoon granulated sugar (or 1 tablespoon simple syrup) into the bottom of the glass.
  3. Add a splash (about 1 tablespoon / 15 ml) of water to help dissolve the sugar.
  4. Gently muddle the mint leaves just until fragrant oils release, about 10-15 gentle presses. Avoid pulverizing the mint to prevent bitterness.
  5. Pour 2 ounces (60 ml) bourbon over the muddled mint and sugar.
  6. Pack the glass with crushed ice, mounding it slightly over the rim.
  7. Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 20 seconds to chill and mix the ingredients.
  8. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig, slapped between your hands to release aroma, and optionally add a straw.

Notes

Use spearmint for traditional flavor. Muddle gently to avoid bitterness. Crushed ice is essential for proper chilling and dilution. Adjust sugar or syrup to taste. Fresh mint should be stored wrapped in a damp paper towel in the fridge. Avoid frozen mint as it loses aroma and texture.
