light apple cider old fashioned - featured image

A crisp, refreshing twist on the classic old fashioned, made with smooth bourbon, fresh apple cider, and warm spices. This easy cocktail comes together in under five minutes and is perfect for fall gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ounces bourbon (Buffalo Trace or Bulleit recommended)
  • 2 ounces fresh apple cider (unfiltered preferred)
  • 23 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 orange peel
  • Optional: thin apple slice or star anise for garnish
  • 1 large ice cube or a few smaller ones

Instructions

  1. Chill your rocks glass in the freezer for about 10 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prep ingredients, then dump the water out.
  2. Place one large ice cube (or a few smaller ones) in the chilled glass.
  3. Pour 2 ounces of bourbon over the ice and give it a quick swirl.
  4. Add 2 ounces of fresh apple cider over the bourbon. Do not stir yet.
  5. Add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters on top.
  6. Stir gently with a bar spoon for 15-20 seconds until well combined and chilled.
  7. Express the orange peel over the glass (skin side down) to release the oils, rub the peel around the rim, then drop it in.
  8. Place a cinnamon stick in the glass as a stirrer.
  9. If desired, float a thin apple slice or star anise on top. Serve immediately.

Notes

For a non-alcoholic version, swap bourbon for 2 ounces of strong brewed chai tea concentrate. For a lower-sugar version, use dry apple cider. Batch the bourbon, apple cider, and bitters in a pitcher (without ice) for parties; refrigerate up to 24 hours and pour over fresh ice when serving.
