A warm, cozy spiked apple cider with cinnamon whiskey that’s perfect for autumn evenings and holiday gatherings. This light and balanced drink combines fresh apple cider with whole spices and a gentle kick of whiskey for the ultimate comfort in a mug.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 64 ounces (about 1.9 liters) apple cider, preferably fresh and unfiltered
  • 1 cup (240 ml) cinnamon whiskey (e.g., Fireball or Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire)
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) honey (or maple syrup for vegan)
  • 4 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 6–8 whole cloves
  • 2 whole star anise (optional)
  • Orange slices, for garnish
  • Fresh apple slices (e.g., Honeycrisp or Fuji), for garnish

Instructions

  1. Combine the Base: Pour the 64 ounces of apple cider into a large pot. Turn the heat to medium-high and let it start warming up, but don’t let it boil. While it heats, add the 2 tablespoons of honey and stir until it dissolves completely, about 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add the Whole Spices: Drop in the 4 cinnamon sticks, 6-8 whole cloves, and 2 star anise (if using). Stir well. Let the cider simmer gently over medium-low heat for 20 minutes. Do not rush this step; the spices need time to infuse.
  3. Taste and Adjust: After 20 minutes, taste the cider. If you want a stronger cinnamon flavor, let it steep another 5-10 minutes. If it’s perfect, move on.
  4. Add the Whiskey: Reduce the heat to low. Slowly pour in the 1 cup of cinnamon whiskey, stirring gently to combine. Let it warm through for about 5 minutes. Do not let it boil after adding the whiskey.
  5. Prep Your Garnishes: While the cider is warming, slice your orange and apple into thin rounds. Cut orange slices in half to fit nicely on the rim of the mug.
  6. Ladle and Serve: Using a ladle, pour the hot spiked cider into mugs, leaving a little room at the top. Float an orange slice and a few apple slices in each mug. Optionally, add a cinnamon stick to each mug for extra visual appeal.
  7. Final Touch: If desired, add a tiny drizzle of honey on top of the foam. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Don’t boil the cider as it will concentrate the sugar and make it taste syrupy. Add the whiskey last and only warm it through to preserve the smooth finish. Use whole spices instead of ground to avoid cloudiness and grit. This recipe doubles and triples beautifully for parties. For a slow cooker version, combine all ingredients except whiskey and cook on low for 2-3 hours, then add whiskey in the last 15 minutes and keep on warm.
