These Easy Mummy Pigs in a Blanket are a fun and delicious Halloween appetizer made with cocktail sausages wrapped in crescent roll dough strips to look like tiny mummies. Ready in about 25 minutes, they’re a crowd-pleaser that will disappear from the table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (12 ounces) cocktail sausages (lil’ smokies or mini hot dogs)
  • 1 can (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard (for eyes)
  • 1 large egg (beaten with a splash of water for egg wash)
  • Flour (for dusting work surface)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Lightly dust a cutting board or clean counter with flour. Open the can of crescent roll dough and unroll it carefully. Do not separate the perforated triangles.
  3. Pinch the diagonal seams together to form one solid rectangle of dough.
  4. Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut the dough lengthwise into strips about ¼ to ½ inch wide (⅓ inch is ideal). You should get 8 to 10 strips.
  5. Take one cocktail sausage and place it at the end of a dough strip. Wrap the strip around the sausage, leaving small gaps between each pass to create a mummy bandage look. Do not pull the dough tight. Tuck the end of the strip underneath the sausage to secure it.
  6. Arrange the wrapped mummies on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about an inch of space between each one.
  7. Beat the egg with a tablespoon of water in a small bowl. Using a pastry brush, lightly coat each mummy with the egg wash.
  8. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until deep golden brown and sausages are heated through.
  9. Let the mummies cool on the baking sheet for 2 to 3 minutes. Using a toothpick, dab a tiny dot of yellow mustard on each mummy for eyes.
  10. Serve warm. Best eaten within 15 minutes of baking.

Notes

Let crescent roll dough sit at room temperature for exactly 10 minutes before cutting to prevent tearing. Don’t use reduced-fat crescent rolls as they tear more easily. For best results, serve within 15 minutes of baking. Can be wrapped up to 2 hours ahead and refrigerated; add egg wash just before baking. If refrigerated before baking, add 1-2 extra minutes to baking time.
