This Homemade Pumpkin Cream Cheese Swirl Bread is the perfect fall treat—moist, spiced pumpkin bread with a creamy, tangy cream cheese ribbon running through the middle. It’s simple enough for a weekday bake but special enough for holiday brunches, and it tastes even better the next day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (for cream cheese swirl)
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (for cream cheese swirl)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Position the rack in the center of the oven. Line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang on the long sides. Lightly spray the parchment with nonstick spray.
  2. Make the cream cheese swirl mixture first. In a small bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with ¼ cup granulated sugar, 1 egg yolk, and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth and completely lump-free, about 2 minutes with a hand mixer. Set aside at room temperature.
  3. Whisk the dry ingredients together. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, ½ teaspoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, ½ teaspoon nutmeg, ½ teaspoon ginger, ¼ teaspoon cloves, and ½ teaspoon salt.
  4. Mix the wet ingredients. In a large bowl, whisk together 1 cup granulated sugar and ½ cup packed brown sugar with ½ cup vegetable oil until combined. Add 3 room-temperature eggs one at a time, whisking well after each. Stir in 1 cup pumpkin puree and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  5. Combine wet and dry ingredients. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients in two additions, folding gently with a rubber spatula. Mix just until no streaks of flour remain. The batter will be thick and slightly fluffy.
  6. Layer the batter and cream cheese. Pour half of the pumpkin batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread it evenly. Drop spoonfuls of the cream cheese mixture over the batter. Pour the remaining pumpkin batter on top, spreading gently. Drop the remaining cream cheese mixture in spoonfuls over the top.
  7. Create the swirl. Take a butter knife or skewer and insert it straight down into the batter. Drag it through in a figure-eight pattern, going from one end of the pan to the other. About 5 or 6 passes is enough.
  8. Bake. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 55 to 65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs. The top should be golden brown and spring back when lightly touched.
  9. Cool properly. Let the bread cool in the pan on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Then use the parchment handles to lift it out and transfer it to the rack to cool completely.

Notes

Room temperature ingredients matter—let eggs and cream cheese sit out for 30 minutes. Don’t overmix the batter. The swirl technique is key: layer and use a figure-eight pattern with a knife. Check for doneness early; if top browns too quickly, tent with foil. Let cool completely before slicing to preserve the swirl.
