Soft, tender sugar cookies topped with tangy cream cheese frosting and colorful sprinkles, perfect for cozy occasions and nostalgic treats.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups (345 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups (300 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 8 oz (226 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 3 cups (360 g) powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons milk
  • ½ cup (85 g) assorted sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed for 3-4 minutes until fluffy and pale.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract until smooth and glossy.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  6. Drop dough balls about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets using a tablespoon or cookie scoop. Lightly flatten each ball to about ½ inch thick.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are set but centers remain slightly soft. Cookies will firm as they cool.
  8. Transfer cookies to a cooling rack and cool completely for 20-30 minutes before frosting.
  9. For the frosting, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy, about 2-3 minutes.
  10. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing until combined. Add milk to reach spreadable consistency.
  11. Spread frosting generously on each cooled cookie and press sprinkles gently into the frosting to create monster eyes and texture.
  12. Let frosting set for at least 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Let butter and cream cheese sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before mixing to avoid lumpy frosting. Chill dough for 15-20 minutes if cookies spread too much. Rotate baking sheets halfway through baking for even heat distribution. Press sprinkles gently into frosting to prevent sliding. Store frosted cookies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days; bring to room temperature before serving.
