A warm, creamy buffalo chicken dip baked inside a hollowed-out sourdough bread bowl, perfect for game days or cozy nights in. This comforting dish combines shredded chicken, cream cheese, hot sauce, and cheddar for a crowd-pleasing appetizer that’s both easy and delicious.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 round loaf sourdough or Italian bread (about 8–9 inches wide)
  • 2 cups cooked shredded chicken (rotisserie or canned, drained well)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup buffalo hot sauce (such as Frank’s RedHot)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (sharp preferred)
  • 1/2 cup ranch dressing
  • 1 packet ranch seasoning mix
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • Optional: chopped green onions or fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Let cream cheese sit out to soften.
  2. Prepare the bread bowl: Using a serrated knife, cut a thin slice (about 1 inch thick) off the top of the bread loaf and set aside as a lid. Carefully hollow out the inside, leaving a 1-inch wall. Tear the removed bread into bite-sized chunks and place on a baking sheet for toasting later.
  3. Make the dip filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded chicken, buffalo hot sauce, shredded cheddar, ranch dressing, and ranch seasoning mix. Stir until well combined but not overmixed. If too thick, add a tablespoon of milk.
  4. Fill the bread bowl: Spoon the dip mixture into the hollowed loaf, packing gently but firmly. Mound slightly on top.
  5. Brush with butter: Using a pastry brush, coat the outside of the bread loaf and the cut side of the lid with melted butter.
  6. Bake the dip: Place the filled bread bowl on a baking sheet with the lid beside it. Bake for 20 minutes. If browning too fast, tent loosely with foil. Continue baking for 10-15 more minutes until bubbly and cheese is melted.
  7. Toast the bread pieces: About 5 minutes before the dip is done, add the reserved bread chunks to the oven on a separate sheet. Toast until golden and crispy (about 5 minutes). Watch carefully.
  8. Finish and serve: Remove from oven. Place lid at a slight angle on top. Garnish with green onions or parsley if desired. Serve immediately with toasted bread chunks, tortilla chips, carrot sticks, or celery.

Notes

Don’t overfill the bread bowl—leave about 1/2 inch space at top to prevent overflow. Watch oven closely as temperatures vary. Make dip filling ahead and refrigerate overnight; let sit at room temperature 15 minutes before baking. Use room temperature ingredients for smoothest texture. Toast bread chunks separately to keep them crispy.
