A quick and easy soda bread recipe using Greek yogurt, honey, and oats that yields a moist, tender loaf with a slightly crisp crust. Perfect for beginners and versatile for any meal.

  • 1/2 cup (45g) rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (240ml) Greek yogurt (full-fat preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk (whole, almond, or oat milk)
  • Optional: 1-2 tablespoons rolled oats for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease a cast-iron skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, combine 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup (45g) rolled oats, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Stir gently to mix evenly.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup (240ml) Greek yogurt, 2 tablespoons honey, and 1/4 cup (60ml) milk until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and fold together gently with a wooden spoon or spatula until just combined. The dough will be sticky.
  5. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and shape into a round loaf about 7 inches (18 cm) wide and 2 inches (5 cm) tall. Avoid over-kneading.
  6. Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet or skillet. Score a deep ‘X’ across the top with a sharp knife.
  7. Optionally, sprinkle 1-2 tablespoons of rolled oats on top for extra crunch and rustic appearance.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the crust is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. The loaf should sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  9. Cool the bread on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing to allow the crumb to set.

Notes

Do not overmix or knead the dough to keep the bread tender. Use fresh baking soda for best rise. If crust browns too quickly, tent with foil and continue baking. For gluten-free, substitute flour and oats accordingly. For vegan, replace Greek yogurt with coconut or almond yogurt and honey with maple syrup or agave nectar.
